Types of Event

Dinner party

Singles dinner parties are like any other, just that there are equal numbers of males and females. It's a good chance to chat with other singles, but may have limited options for mingling, unless there are additional events to allow this to happen. Prices are around 20 to 30 pounds.

Dinner in the dark

(Also known as dating in the dark)

An unusual form of dinner dating, where the participants sit in the dark. The waiters wear night vision goggles. I have heard of a dinner in the dark party waited on by blind waiters. The room was so dark that the natural liminesence of the fish could be seen! The idea behind this format is to allow participants are unencumbered by each others physical appearance, and to concentrate on what is said. Prices are around 25 to 35 pounds.

Speed date

(Also known as speed dating, 3 minute dating, 6 minute dating, speedydating, fastdating, quickdating)

Currently the most popular singles event. Generally, the ladies sit in seats with the gents sitting opposite. every few minutes, a whistle is blown, or a bell is rung, and the gents move on to the next lady. The time for each date is generally 3 minutes, although it can be as long as 8 or 10 minutes. The participants mark who they'd like to see again on a sheet, and then hand in the sheet at the end of the session. Later, those participants who selected each other are contacted, and given each others contact details. Prices are around 15 to 20 pounds

Dress code: depends on the event, but in my experience, the best compromise is smart casual. casual can be good, but you'll look out of place if you look too formal.

Lock and key party

This is a mechanism by which everybody meets everybody else. The ladies have locks, and the gents have keys. The testing of a key in a lock also helps to break the ice. It's a little more natural than the enforced switching of speed dating, and may allow you to spend longer with those you are attracted to.

Intellidating

Intellidating isn't an organised event, but more of a name given to participation in intellectual events for the purpose of meeting people. Poetry readings, art classes and book clubs are example of the types of events someone might attend.
